Mělnické vinařství Kraus

Mělník Winery Kraus is a family company based in city Mělník (50 km north from Prague) in the heart of the Mělník subregion. We produce wines made from our own grapes. The vineyards use a favorable microclimate nearthe river Labe (Elbe), located on the southwest oriented slopes. The superiority of our assortment is made up of white wines. The flagships of ourgrape varieties are Ryzlink rýnský (Riesling), Hibernal and Pinot Noir.

The history of the viticulture in Mělník began in the 9th century, the greatest prosperity reached in the era of Emperor Charles IV. in the 14th century.Tradition of winemaking in the Kraus family has continued for the third generation. Its founder was Professor Vilém Kraus, grape-breeder, college educator and author of many publications on viticulture.Grape production and wine production in the Kraus Winery are growing steadily, with a 24-hectare vineyard area and an annual production of approximately 120 000 bottles. White wines make up about 80% of total production. All wines are declared as Wine with protected geographical denomination Czech Land wine. We do not use the established wine classification based only on the grape sugar quantity, our goal is the optimal physiological maturity of the grapes and the balanced ratio of sugars and acids. Most bottles are closed with screw caps to keep wine longer for freshness and youthful flavour.

Technology

The grapesare harvested by hand, with the careful handling. Musts and wine are processed withminimal mechanical pumping, using gravity. Whitegrapes are cooled to a low temperature, slowing down the adverse biochemicalprocesses and improving the subsequent sedimentation of the must. Fermentationbegins at temperatures around 15 °C. We use stainless steel tanks.Mashed redgrapes are fermentated in open vats using manual immersion. We press at minimalpressures about three weeks after maceration and fermentation. The best redwine of the Pinot Noir variety matures in barrique oak barrels.

Vineyard
Klamovka

Our largest vineyard with 15 hectares. It is on a slight southwest slope below the Chloumek hill about three kilometers north of the center of Mělník. The subsoil is a marlstone, especially in the highest parts of vineyard is the stony trail on the surface of the vineyard. This contributes to better use of sunlight (accumulation effect). The marlstone subsoil gives to the wines slightly minerality and salinity in the taste. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Tramin, Dornfelder, Blauer Portugieser, Chardonnay, Solaris, Hibernal are grown here.

Vineyard
Ješovická

Ješovice is located between Liběchov and Štětí. Young seedling´s of 6 hectares where planted in 2013 on a slight western slope. The soil is light, warm. There are only varieties with a naturally higher resistance to fungal diseases and frost – Hibernal, Solaris and Souvignier Gris.

Vineyard
Liběchovská

The vineyard lies behind village Liběchov in the direction to Štětí. Approximately 3 hectares is an older planting of the Riesling.

The grapes are mainly used for the production of sparkling wine.
